Crowntail Plakat Betta
The Crowntail Plakat Betta is the new short finned version of a Crowntail Betta and due to this type is rapidly becoming the new trend in popularity with its striking bold personality and unique fin structure. Originating from Indonesian betta breeders, this betta variety displays a compact body with a dramatic short crown-like tail, featuring spiked rays that create an eye-catching silhouette.
Colours and patterns vary widely between individuals, making every fish truly one of a kind. Crowntail Plakat Bettas are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists due to their hardy nature and engaging behaviour.
As a labyrinth fish, bettas are able to breathe atmospheric air thanks to a specialised organ, allowing them to thrive in low-oxygen environments when properly cared for.
Important: Never house two male bettas together, as they are highly territorial and will fight.
Images shown are representative only. Exact colour, pattern and fin shape will vary with each individual fish.
Key Characteristics
Distinctive crowntail fin with shorter, powerful plakat form
Wide range of colours and markings
Intelligent, curious and interactive with their keeper
Can display flaring behaviour when stimulated
Suitable for nano and small aquariums
Males and females may only be housed together briefly for breeding purposes
Recommended Aquarium Size
For optimal health and wellbeing, a minimum tank size of 15 litres is recommended. Bettas can survive in smaller environments, however stable water quality, heating and filtration are essential. In the wild, they inhabit shallow, plant-dense waters and are well adapted to calm conditions.
Tank Mate Compatibility
While bettas are known for their feisty temperament, they can coexist with select peaceful species. Avoid fish that nip fins or resemble bettas in shape or colour.
Suitable companions may include:
Corydoras catfish
Small tetras (e.g. neon or ember tetras)
Kuhli loaches
Harlequin rasboras
Peaceful invertebrates such as shrimp or snails
Always monitor behaviour when introducing tank mates.
Feeding & Diet
Bettas are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet. High-quality betta pellets or granules should form the staple of their feeding routine.
For variety and optimal health, supplement with:
Frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp
Bloodworms
Insect-based flakes or bites
Feed small portions once or twice daily and avoid overfeeding.
Ideal Tank Setup
Filtration
Bettas prefer calm water with minimal flow. Gentle filtration such as sponge filters or low-flow hang-on filters work best and prevent fin damage.
Heating
As tropical fish, bettas thrive in warm water. A heater and thermometer are strongly recommended, particularly during cooler months. Ideal temperatures range between 22–30°C.
Lighting
Soft to moderate lighting helps showcase your betta while supporting a natural day–night cycle. Dimmable lighting can help control algae growth.
Plants
Live plants are highly beneficial and encourage natural behaviour. Bettas often rest on broad leaves and enjoy dense cover.
Popular plant choices include:
Java fern
Anubias
Cryptocoryne
Amazon sword
Moss varieties
Decorations
Create hiding spaces using driftwood, caves and smooth ornaments. Silk or soft artificial plants are suitable alternatives if live plants are not used.
Substrate
There are no strict substrate requirements. Sand, gravel or fine pebbles are all suitable and help support beneficial bacteria within the aquarium.
